The Caravan

Road Trip

We can paint a pretty grim picture of life across our planet. But in fact, doing the opposite can produce surprisingly curative results. Spin the globe. Pack a bag. Break bread with strangers. Soak in radical beauty.

When you own a caravan you will always have the option for a cheap holiday and whenever you get a free weekend you can pack up and drive somewhere new. This is a great way to explore the natural beauty that lies close to home and is also one of the most child friendly types of travel.

The advantage of a group tour is that you will be automatically thrown into the mix with a lot of people.

However, some people just can’t stand the thought of having all of their activities laid out for them and prefer the freedom of independent travel.

The Package Holiday

Although the package holiday is sometimes looked down upon by hardcore backpackers, there is nothing wrong with wanted to spend your hard earned two weeks holiday on a sunny beach partying with friends and family.

This is not one of the types of travel where you learn a lot about another culture or get to know the locals. It’s all about spending a week or two having the time of your life in paradise!

Long Term Slow Travel

This is the style of travel long term, slow, when you take several months or years to make your way around the world, staying in each location for long enough to really soak up the culture.

Long term travelers are often budget backpackers, trying to make their travel fund stretch for as long as possible by staying in hostels and looking for cheap food and attractions. Rather than other short term types of travel, long term travel often becomes more of a lifestyle choice.

Sometimes these types of travel experiences are funded by savings, or sometimes long term travel can be funded by working on the road.

Canada may not be the most exotic of destinations, but sometimes, exotic is overrated. Canada tempts us with familiarity, blissfully cool weather and, most of all, a deep reservoir of niceness.

Event Travel

This is when you travel to a destination specifically to attend an event, . It might also include attending a music festival or following your favorite band around on tour.

One of the main advantages to these types of travel experiences is that you will be visiting alongside thousands of people who share the same interest as you.

For this type of travel, you need some type of outdoorsy activity. Camping, hiking, and whitewater rafting all fall under this category. But, you don’t need to be terribly adventurous to enjoy the outdoors.

Backpacking

When I think of backpacking, I tend to think of Europe or Australia, but really you can do it anywhere. Backpacking is really a form of budget travel (as opposed to luxury travel, which I suppose I should also somehow work into my classification system.) Backpacking is also generally a longer-term type of travel than the typical vacation.

Many backpackers are younger, but that’s not always true. They carry what they need with them, and usually travel from place to place as cheaply as possible, sometimes booking overnight trains to save money on accommodations, or staying at hostels.

In many places backpacking is a rite of passage. Sometimes recent college grads will spend their last summer traveling this way before entering “the real world.” In some countries they have what is called a “Gap Year” where young people travel the world for a year, often before entering college.

Citizens of one of the happiest countries on Earth are surprisingly comfortable contemplating a topic many prefer to avoid. Is that the key to joy?

City Trips

These trips take place in a big city. Decbe Chicago, New York, D.C., London, or Paris. Or maybe slightly smaller cities, like St. Louis, Houston, or Springfield (any of them). But the main point of these trips is usually to do some sightseeing. Decbe hit up a few museums, or do a boat or bus tour.

I think these trips are great because there are so many different cities out there, both throughout the U.S. and abroad, that have so many different cultures and unique things to offer.

City travel may be more fast-paced than some would like for a vacation, but the great thing about it is that there are always endless possibilities of things to do and see (and taste!)

I had to put this one on here, of course, because it doesn’t really fit into any of the other groups. Amusement park travel, perhaps?

There may be an element of “beachy” vacation in there, but it’s certainly not all of it.
